The 5Km main event was won by Mike Jones of Cambridge in 15:42, followed by Matt Carter of Saugus and Philip Galesbach of Medford.
YOUTH RUNNERS: Note that in addition to the Great Bear galleries, Newton Sports Photography also has galleries of the Newton Heart Break Hill Road Race and the Northeast Indoor Classic.

The Weston meet yielded a lot of great photos but given the lighting conditions they are taking a bit of work to process, but figured this should get out first. A big highlight of the meet was Westford Academy’s Brendan Sullivan clearing a meet record and USA#26 16 feet in the pole vault in dark and chilly conditions.
By the time Brendan was done jumping, the pole vault box area was just a dark abyss. See below for a slide show of shots of girl’s winner Steph Brown from Newton North along with Brendan’s successful clearance of 16 feet and then attempts at 16’6″.
You can also see these photos in the Weston Invitational Pole Vault Gallery. A few blurry ones but difficult to focus camera in the dark!

For the past several years employees at a local biopharmaceutical company have run as a team in the Boston Marathon to raise funds for the National Organization of Rare Diseases (NORD). The team went out on Monday and all finished under very hot conditions urged on by the thought of the patient partners they were running for. Click here for photos from the event.
You can learn more about the team at http://runningforrarediseases.org/home. You can read more about the team’s leader in the Boston Business Journal.
One highlight of their annual fundraising effort is the silent auction, where over 47 great prizes donated by local business are available including weekend hotels stays and sports tickets. Give your coach the getaway/outing he/she deserves.
Note that auctions for Red Sox vs. Rangers tickets ends today (Friday 4/13) at 11:59.

One of my goals with NewtonSportsPhotography.com is to help raise funds for rare disease research. To help me in this goal, I would ask you to please visit the auction site and consider bidding on an item. Contributions over the value of the item are tax deductible. You can also make a contribution directly to support a particular runner.
As an added incentive, the largest bidder from the NewtonSportsPhotography.com or ma.milesplit.com community will receive a gift certificate for a photo shoot of one of your child’s sporting events and an 8×10 of the photo of your choice.
If your a budding photographer, you might consider item #41 as well. It is fully tax deductible as the value is near $0
.
The auction closes on Friday April 20th at 11:59am (just before noon).

Jenn Suhr set a new American Indoor Pole Vault record of 16 feet at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on February 4th. The “made-for-TV” setup of the meet meant only one photographer was on the infield positioned to shoot her from the runway side of the pit, so our position in the bleachers turned out to be good to capture a special moment for the meet and for Jenn.

The Newton Lions U13-U14 Bay team (team photos) finished the regular season with a 8-0-2 record to win their six team division last week. This enabled them to compete with other eight other division 2 winners for the chance to represent the 180 or so boston area youth soccer teams in the state-wide Massachusetts Tournament of Champions.
They faced Lexington’s #1 team last night in the first round of the playoffs. The Lexington team was from a higher division and also had a 8-0-2 record. After going down 0-1 they came back with a 1-1 equalizer and the game finished regulation in a 1-1 tie. That put the game into two 10 minute overtime periods. They team played well but Lexington had an explosive striker who scored the go ahead goal for them.

From the Boston Globe:
The Newton North girls started on the track and did their best in the final running event. The 4 x 400 relay team of sophomores Meghan Belleraje, Madison Nadeau, and Carla Forbes, and senior Margo Gillis set a meet record with a time of 3:59.61.
“It meant a lot finishing off the running events with a win,’’ said coach Joe Tranchita. “And to get a meet record really boosts the morale even more.’’
The Tigers also won the long jump, triple jump, discus, 4 x 100 hurdles, and 1,600 sprint medley, finishing with 73 points. Andover came in second with 60 points, and Weymouth finished third with 39.
“We had 37 points running and 36 in the field,’’ said Tranchita. “I always say this is the purest team meet and that type of balance really shows that.’’
Senior Amy Ren came back from an ankle injury to help boost the Tigers.
“I had been out for three meets and I just wanted to go out there and be a part of the team,’’ said Ren, a part of three winning teams — the long jump, triple jump, and the hurdles.
Ren, who will run at Dartmouth next year, said getting over the pain in her ankle was a mental thing. “The ambition to do well trumps the pain,’’ she said.
